Who am I? Axel Devillard, creator of En Chair et en Os
Falling in love with anatomy… and rediscovering a passion for drawing.
My name is Axel Devillard. I was initially trained at an osteopathy school, which allowed me to get my nose into anatomy — and fall in love with it.
I always doodled in my notebooks in middle and high school, and it wasn't necessarily well-regarded by my teachers.
Then came the anatomy classes of Mr. Diacquenod, a colorful character, sweating passion for this subject and his teaching… that passion is contagious, and I caught it from the very first 5-hour lecture.
Finally! My doodles were going to become anatomy doodles — and they were going to have meaning.
The goal of "En Chair et en Os" (In Flesh and Bone) was initially to have a good reason to improve my drawing skills, because more and more people would be able to judge my work, both in terms of my brushwork and my ability to avoid anatomical errors.
Today, I create educational and artistic materials for healthcare professionals, and we work with experts to visualize complex discourse.
Each illustration is drawn by hand, then finalized digitally with a constant requirement:
